The reigning Philippine SuperLiga Grand Prix runner up defeated the PSL All-Filipino Conference second placer as the Cignal HD Spikers beat the RC Cola-Air Force Raiders in straight sets, 25-17, 25-23, 25-23, to kick off the 2014 PSL Grand Prix presented by Asics on October 18 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Sarah Ammerman hammered 16 attack points and two service aces for 19 points, while Abigail Praca was the best scoring local with 11, three of her points coming from blocks. Lindsay Stalzer had 15 markers for the satellite TV providers.
HD Spikers coach Sammy Acaylar noted his two wards’ performances as Ammerman led the attack and Praca controlled the net on defense.
Cignal dominated the first set early, leading 16-5 by the second technical timeout. They then went ahead by as many as 12 after Honey Royse Tubino gave her team set point.
The Raiders had more fight in the succeeding frames, but they were not able to win one as Ammerman closed the scoring in both occasions.
Emily Brown was the lone double digit scorer for the Raiders with 18 points. Fellow international player Bonita Wise had nine.
RC Cola-Air Force mentor Rhovyl Velayo had a rough debut as his team took some time to find its form. (JP Abcede)
