Sixth-seed PLDT Home TVolution Power Attackers tripped the Petron Blaze Spikers in four sets, 16-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-22, in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Philippine SuperLiga All Filipino Conference women’s division on July 13 at the Cuneta Astrodome.
The Power Attackers bucked a slow start as they took the final three sets of the match to arrange a meeting with semifinalist-in-waiting RC Cola-Air Force. PLDT was on its way to cruise in the fourth frame, but the Blaze Spikers played with more urgency to temporarily take the upperhand, 21-20. However, errors by Petron prevented the match from reaching a winner take all fifth set.
To winning coach Roger Gorayeb, this is his team’s way of making up for the disappointing finished it had at the PSL Grand Prix were they got upended in the semifinals despite winning all of its prior matches.
“It pains us so much, hindi namin matanggap yun. Kelangan namin makabawi,” Gorayeb said.
Player of the match Louann Latigay led PLDT Home with 18 points, all coming from attacks. Captain Suzanne Roces contributed 13 attack points to finish with 14 overall.
The expressive Gorayeb told his wards to “treat this as a championship game”.
“There is no more next game after this,” he added.
Gorayeb also credits his team’s reception and floor defense as well as Rubie de Leon’s command of her hitters in the victory.
Women’s division top scorer Dindin Santiago was still true to her form with a match high 28 points, 23 of those attack points and four of those block points. The telling statistic was that Petron Blaze committed 34 errors in the entire match. (JP Abcede)
