The PLDT Home TVolution Power Attackers finished third in the women’s division of the 2014 Philippine SuperLiga All Filipino Conference after holding off new team AirAsia Zest Flying Spikers in four sets, 25-17, 18-25, 25-18, 25-23, on July 26 at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.
The Power Attackers were on their way to cruising for the bronze medal in the fourth set when they went ahead, 22-15. However, the Flying Spikers had other things in mind as they put up one last fight to tie the count at 22-all.
Maruja Banaticla scored the winning point after she won the battle on top of the net from the left wing as the referee had a dramatic pause before pointing towards PLDT’s side of the court.
Winning coach Roger Gorayeb commented that although they did not reach their objectives, he was satisfied in their performance this conference as they look to improve for the PSL Grand Prix.
“Nagpapasalamat pa rin ako,” Gorayeb said. “Third place is not bad.”
Sue Roces powered her team with 16 points, 15 of them from attacks. Cha Soriano had 13 attack points to finish with 14 total, while Louann Latigay concluded with 12 markers.
Stephanie Mercado led AirAsia with 15 points, 12 from attacks and two via service aces. Aby Marano also had ten to conclude her first conference in the league.
The Flying Spikers had 11 blocks, but this was negated when they committed 31 errors and they only had 40 attack points compared to PLDT Home’s 50. (JP Abcede)
