The AirAsia Flying Spikers got their groove back as they severed the PLDT Home TVolution Power Attackers in four sets, 24-26, 25-19, 25-20, 25-18, on June 15 at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay for their third victory at the Philippine SuperLiga All Filipino Conference.
After failing to take the first set, the Flying Spikers made sure that they finish the task in the next three. In the final frame, they built a 19-11 bubble behind Cha Cruz, May Macatuno, Stephanie Mercado, and Aby Marano. A spate of unforced errors by AirAsia had the Power Attackers knocking to within four, but Arriana May Angustia and late entry Jeushl Wench Tiu closed the door to take the win.
AirAsia Zest coach Ramil de Jesus acknowledged Macatuno for her spell as starting setter.
“Nagbago kami ng setter. Naging successful naman,” de Jesus said. “Hindi madaling kalaban ang PLDT kaya ang daming adjustments na dapat gawin.”
Cha Cruz powered her team with 19 points, 14 off attacks and four from blocks. Aby Marano and Stephanie Mercado had 17 markers apiece, while Michelle Laborte finished with ten.
The Flying Spikers secured most of their points off blocks, as they had 18 compared to PLDT’s three. Nevertheless, de Jesus believes that they have to work on their serves and reception as they will face the undefeated Petron Blaze Spikers on July 5 in Cebu.
Suzanne Roces led the charge of the Power Attackers with 16 points as Louann Latigay came up with 11. They currently have a 2-3 standing as they close out the prelims against sibling team Cignal on June 18. (JP Abcede)
