The RC Cola-Philippine Air Force Raiders claimed the bronze medal after beating the Cignal HD Spikers, 26-24, 23-25, 25-20, 26-24, at the 2014 Philippine SuperLiga Grand presented by ASICS women’s division battle for third on November 30 at the Cuneta Astrodome.
Emily Brown and Bonita Wise stepped up in the key moment of the fourth set as the two conspired to have their squad reach serving for match point, 24-21. Cignal countered and tied it at deuce before Wise scored on a running attack and Judy Ann Caballejo clinched it from the open side.
“Yung panalo namin sa kanila mas importante kasi placing ito for third and fourth,” stated RC Cola-Air Force coach Rhovyl Verayo, who has since moved on from his team’s devastating defeat to Cignal HD in the second round. “Placing kung sino aakyat sa podium, yun ang laban namin ngayon,”
Relied for their leadership, the RC Cola-PAF imports lit up the stat sheet this time around with Brown delivering 24 attack points and Wise with four blocks en route to 14 markers. Maika Ortiz came through with 13 markers, while Rhea Dimaculangan had 61 excellent sets and six points.
Meanwhile, Caballejo had an all-around performance with 11 points, 16 digs, and 14 receptions.
“Confident ako sa defense ni Caballejo,” Verayo said as he had to shuffle his rotation since his players were starting to feel the tedious schedule of the tournament. “Sunod-sunod yung laro, walang pahinga. Sinubukan ko si Judy, nag-click naman.”
RC Cola-Air Force had a 6-6 overall win-loss record in the tourney. Despite that, it is still an improvement from last year’s PSL Grand Prix performance where the franchise ended up last among six competitors.
Sarah Julie Ammerman hammered down 26 points with Honey Royse Tubino following suit with 15. Abigail Praca and Lindsay Stalzer finished with ten markers each.
